Plz Help "Updating the WinXP"

I have WinXP installed with SP2 on my PC, but when try to update the system, it goes on and on and does nothing, I only see the page says "Checking for the latest updates for your computer..."  all day long.

Plz help how to update the system without re-installing the windows, I also have googled this problem, thus got no possitive result,

Or maybe there is a problem with the registry, since I made some changes to the registry coz the "Folder Option" menu was missing.
