for some reason, anticheat needs to connect twice to a server to load properly
is this a "feature" or something else?

This is because the server you are connecting to most likely uses q2admin or R1Q2 to force you to reconnect.

Actually I think I can work around this in the server so it only loads on the final connection attempt.
