R1Q2 and Raedon

I was having problems getting Quake2 to load with a Raedon card that I bought using opengl- After doing some exhaustive research on the internet, it would appear that there is no fix for it. So I ended up buying a new Nvidia card- my card works fine BUT I have one friend running Windows vista 64 with a Nvida card that can't get Q2 to run and another friend with a Raedon card that cant get it to load at all. The Nvidia card just keeps going back to software mode and windowed mode.

Do you think R1Q2 would resolve these issues? Is there something that can be changed in the Nvidia properties maybe?
