Image format examples

This page contains a few sample images and tells you which format is chosen for each one.

Take a typical MS Paint drawing by someone with no artistic talent:
MS Paint PNG
The above image is saved as a PNG file. This is because there is a lot of empty space and solid blocks of color, allowing the compression algorithm to preserve all of the quality whilst making the file only 3.09 KB (3,173 bytes). If however someone had not read the image format guide and saved this image as a JPEG, this is the resultant mess:

MS Paint JPEG
I tried to set the compression level to achieve the same size as the PNG file. The above JPEG is larger than the PNG at 3.14 KB (3,220 bytes), and looks awful, doesn't it.

However, examples are always the best way of learning things. Below is a whole bunch of images. Decide what format you would use if you were saving the image. Check whether you were right (no checking the filename :)) by hovering your mouse over the image to reveal the format I used.

Well that's about all I can post without going over my bandwidth limits. Hope you got them right, if not go back and read the guide again :).
