
| Word | Meaning |
| Private | A system of sending messages to just a few people. Select their names in the user list and then type your message. |
| Squelch | A method of preventing a certain user's messages from reaching you, for example if they keep pestering you for a game and you don't want to play. |
| Ladder | A ladder is a ranking system for Red Alert players. When someone asks for a ladder game, it means the loser must report to the ladder crew that he/she lost. The most popular ladder is Case's Ladder at www.theladder.com |
| Server | The Westwood chat server for transferring all messages and hosting games. |
| Host | If someone asks you to host a game, it means you must set the game up with all the options. You can host a game of Red Alert by clicking the red Soviet button in the toolbar. |
| Channel | A channel is like a room. There are normally lots of channels in Westwood Chat, and Red_Alert is the most popular. There will be different people in different channels. |
| Chanop | The channel operator. This person sees to the well being of the channel and can remove or ban people (kick or ban) people from his channel. You can tell who the channel operator is because their name begins with an @ symbol. There can be up to two channel operators per channel. |
| Kick | The process of kicking a user out of a channel. |
| Bot | Short for Robot. These monitor the big channels and kick users out for bad language and other bad things. These have names like ConqBot, TanyaBot, FriendBot, etc. |
| Sysop | System Operator. These people monitor what is being said and inform users if they are doing wrong. Also, if you have a problem whilst chatting, then you can call on a sysop. These do not have an @ symbol, but when connecting to the Chat Server it displays a list of sysops. |
| Rank | Somebody's ranking on the ladder. 1 is the best. Unranked means they have never won a game. |
| Action | You can click on the explosion button in the toolbar if you want to show someone an action, eg "R1CH is falling asleep at the keyboard" might be an action. |
| Friendly | A friendly game is where you play an Internet game of Red Alert just for fun. All games are either friendly or ladder. |

| BRB | Short for Be Right Back. |
| GTG | Go To Go. |
| IMHO | In My Humble Opinion. Used when expressing a controversial view. |
| WCHAT | Westwood Chat. |
| WW | Westwood. |
| N E 1 | Anyone. |
| R U | Are you. |
| 4 | For. (eg, NE1 4 a game of RA) |
| AI | Artificial Intelligence. More commonly known as Computer Players. |
| ROTF{L} | Rolling on the floor {laughing} |
| Newbie | Someone who is new to something. |
| Netleague | See ladder. |
| Co-op | Co-operative. Normally teamed up against the computer. |
| LOL | Lots of laughter. |
